Reward multipliers

The biggest bonus category on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is the 3X you’ll earn on travel. You’ll see other cards offering up to 10x on travel, but only when you book via their own Chase Ultimate Rewards portal.

Using a bank’s travel travel portal can come with some significant downsides, so being able to earn 3X on travel booked directly with airlines and hotels is huge.
Still, if you don’t mind portal bookings, Chase will give you 10x total points on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

You’ll also earn 3X Ultimate Rewards points on dining purchases (including takeout and delivery services) and 10X Ultimate Rewards points when you make a special reservation through Chase Dining.

In short, you’ll earn at least 3X points on ravel and dining.

And see below for the advantageous redemption rates your Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card will give you when you book purchase using points in the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal.

Key features

1

Unique Card Benefits

Points are Worth 1.5 cents each in the Chase Travel Portal

Unique to the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card, you’ll get 1.5 cents in value per Chase Ultimate Rewards point when you redeem for any travel in the Ultimate Rewards travel portal. That means that if you want to keep things simple, you can redeem 10,000 points for $150 in travel – ensuring you never get less than 1.5 cents in value from your Ultimate Rewards points.

Even better, if you have other credit cards that earn Ultimate Rewards points, like a Freedom Flex, Freedom Unlimited, Ink Business Preferred, Ink Unlimited, or Ink Cash, you can combine all of those points to your Sapphire Reserve to redeem at this elevated rate.

Priority Pass Lounge Access includes Dining and Experiences

Yes, the Chase Sapphire Reserve has Priority Pass airport lounge access. That’s mentioned below. But what is the unique feature? It’s that American Express and Capital One cardmembers with Priority Pass are not eligible to take advantage of what Priority Pass calls “experiences” which translates to savings on airport shopping, free restaurant dining and spa experiences. Chase Sapphire Reserve (And Chase JP Morgan Reserve) cardmembers are still eligible.

To describe the additional benefit in detail:

1) Airport Dining with Priority Pass

This gives you a credit per person to use at a Priority Pass member restaurant at the airport. My favorite example is Bobby Van’s Steakhouse at JFK’s Terminal 8.

Bobby Van's Steakhouse at JFK - a benefit of the Chase Sapphire Reserve

Per the Priority Pass terms: Cardholders can use their lounge visit entitlement to receive US$28 off the bill. Each US$28 deduction represents a single lounge visit within the Cardholder’s existing lounge visit allocation for which the Cardholder will, where applicable, be charged.

E.g. if a Cardholder registers 1 Guest they will receive US$56 off their bill which will be charged as 1 Cardholder visit + 1 Guest visit on their account. Only 1 membership card per visit per Cardholder will be accepted at point of entry.

The US$28 is valid for purchase of any meal and/or drinks.

Airports all over the world have restaurants that participate in a similar fashion. Talk about value!

2) Spa Experiences

You can get complimentary spa treatments at participating Be Express spas which are all over US airports.

  • As of April 2023, treatments eligible for free were:
  • Be Back 15-minute Massage plus O2 (a US$38 value)
  • Be Back 30-minute Massage (a US$38 value)
  • Polish Change plus Hand Massage (a US$38 value)
  • Be Feet on lounger 10-minute plus O2 (a US$44 value)

In summary, the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card gives you the above experiences in addition to the Priority Pass lounges. This card is great for frequent travelers!

Earns Transferable Points

You’ll earn valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points with each eligible dollar you spend on your Chase Sapphire Reserve. I personally believe that Ultimate Rewards points are the most valuable of all of the major transferable bank points, with transfer partners like World of Hyatt and United Airlines. We value Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 1.75 cents a piece, due to the flexibility their airline and hotel transfer partners provide for booking premium travel.

Here is a full list of Chase Ultimate Rewards airline and hotel transfer partners:

If you don’t understand how to redeem using frequent flyer and hotel programs, you can use your points to book almost any travel directly using the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, where your points are worth 1.5 cents each. You can spend in any interval, but for the ease of explaining it, 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points would book $150 worth of travel.

And Chase also offers a program called Pay Yourself Back, where you can cover certain purchases with your points at a value of 1.25 cents each. Not as good as what you get for travel, but works for some who aren’t currently traveling.

Worst case, you can cash your Ultimate Rewards points out for 1 cent each.

3

Airport Lounge Access

As described above in the Unique Card Benefits of the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you get a full Priority Pass Select membership, which includes unlimited lounge access for you to every Priority Pass airport lounge including up to two guests (additional guests are $27 per visit). Priority Pass dining experiences are included. One time enrollment is required.

Chase is also working on their own network of lounges.

4

Primary Car Rental CDW Waiver

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can not only decline the car rental company’s collision damage waiver when you book and pay with your Card, but rest assured that coverage is Primary. This means that if your rental damage, you would not be forced to first deal with your own auto coverage.

It will be completely taken care of by this coverage, up to $75,000 for theft and collision damage for rental cars in the U.S. and abroad (be sure to check vehicle and country restrictions before traveling). Primary rental car insurance is more rare than you might think! Most are secondary to your own insurance.

Just keep in mind that no CDW/LDW coverage includes liability.

5

Global Entry / TSA PreCheck Reimbursement

You can get a statement credit of up to $100 every four years for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck as reimbursement for the application fee charged to your Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Learn How to Apply

Our review

The Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card is the one that, in a sense, started it all. While rewards cards have been around for decades, The Chase Sapphire Reserve quickly became a must-have upon its launch in 2016. With a huge bonus offer, the Priority Pass airport lounge access, the easy to use $300 travel credits, and 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on all dining and travel made it an easy sell.

Today, it remains one of the strongest travel credit cards on the market, even if other cards like the newer Capital One Venture X and The Platinum Card® from American Express both get solid market share.

The beauty of the Chase Sapphire Reserve lies in its simplicity.

The $300 annual travel credit works itself off without you even noticing, since travel purchases are automatically applied. With the Venture X, for instance, you also get a $300 annual travel credit but can only use it in the Capital One portal.

Then the Chase Sapphire Reserve is just plain “easy” when it comes to earning, knowing that just about every possible travel or dining purchase (including eligible delivery services) will earn 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

And to that end, with a MilesTalk value of 1.75 cents per point when used via transfer partners like World of Hyatt or for First and Business Class airfare via its many airline partners, you know you’ll get value for those points you earn. In fact, your travel and dining purchases (earning 3X points) have a minimum return on spend value of 4.5% (if you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal at 1.5 cents each or an average redemption yield of around 5.25% (3X * 1.75) when you use the Ultimate Rewards airline and hotel partners.

travel-chase-sapphire-reserve

The card is also full of the most important benefits, namely the Priority Pass select membership for airport lounge access for you and 2 guests, including Priority Pass dining as well as primary collision/damage coverage on car rentals and trip delay coverage that kicks in after just a 6 hour delay as well as lost luggage insurance. And then there are the somewhat smaller but still valuable perks like your Global Entry fee reimbursement and 10x total points on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards® and Chase dining purchases.

And of course, there’s that huge bonus when you spend $4,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening….

So yes, it does have a high annual fee, but after the $300 travel credit, it’s effectively just $250 which the card gives you back via it’s earn rate, redemption rate (1.5 cents per point in the portal) and rich benefits.
