American Express® Business Gold Card
Our ratings are determined by the authors and editors on our team. Each individual card feature is compared against all other cards we offer and the total score is an average of those 4 ratings.
Bonus Offer
Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Gold Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership. Terms apply.
KEEP IN MIND: Virgin Flying Club has moved to a dynamic pricing for awards. In some cases we are seeing extreme value like 29,000 point Business Class awards from the US to London. In other cases, the prices have risen dramatically. Run some searches before transferring.
It’s also worth Virgin Atlantic transfer bonuses are fairly frequent between various programs. See historical transfer bonuses to Virgin Atlantic here. This is the 7th transfer bonus this year from a bank program to Virgin Atlantic. Most bonuses have been at 30%, although one from Chase for 40% just ended.
Best Uses of Virgin Flying Club points:
Two great uses are domestically on Delta within the US or US-Mexico/Canada and for economy flights to/from Europe that are as few as 12,000 miles each way on partners such as KLM or Delta.
Another great use is on ITA Airways to/from Italy for 75,000 miles in Business Class. Surcharges are low; even FCO to JFK has only $55 in fees. (Expect that to end once Lufthansa closes on the ITA acquisition). And if you could actually find a Delta One award FROM Europe to the US, it would be just 50,000 points. Availability is a unicorn. Unfortunately, awards TO Europe on Delta now cost more and have $1,000 + surcharges)
The other, well known, “best use” is to book ANA First and Business class awards:
- First Class to/from Japan from West Coast: 145,000 points Round Trip
- First Class to/from Japan from East Coast: 170,000 points Round Trip
- Business Class to/from Japan from West Coast: 105,000 points Round Trip
- Business Class to/from Japan from East Coast: 120,000 points Round Trip
We have seen past bonuses from Chase and American Express of up to 70%, so while 35% seems like a large bonus, it’s in the midrange of historical bonuses. (See historical transfer bonuses to Marriott Bonvoy).
This is almost never a good transfer unless you are topping off for an award you are ready to book. Keep in mind that we value a Membership Rewards point at almost 3X the value of a Marriott Bonvoy point.
However, there are always exceptions and you might find a 5 night stay (5th night free) where the transfer makes sense so do the math – but you likely do not want to transfer speculatively unless you are a Bonvoy pro and believe you will exceed value you can get via other Amex partners.
This offer runs through the end of 2024, so no rush to decide.

3X Membership Rewards Points on Flights and Prepaid Hotels Booked at AmexTravel.com; Otherwise 1X
Earn 3X Membership Rewards® points on flights and prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com using your Business Gold Card; 1X otherwise
- Amazing Membership Rewards points earning rate for 6 popular business spending categories
- No Preset Spending Limit means your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.
- Card membership includes the very well regarded American Express customer service
Pros
- You can't beat the 4X points on 2 out of the following 6 categories each month: U.S. advertising and media, U.S. gas stations, U.S. electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers, U.S. restaurants, U.S. wireless telephone service providers, and U.S. Transit
- Although the annual fee seems high, if you max out the 4X on $150,000 in purchases, that earns you 600,000 Membership Rewards points which Your Best Credit Cards values at around $10,000
- Card membership includes the very well regarded American Express customer service
Cons
- The high annual fee, despite being worth it for high spenders
- If you spend well over $150,000 a year in these categories, you may max it out and remaining spend earns at just 1X.
- Car rental CDW coverage is secondary to your own auto insurance
Instant Transfers as well as solid transfer partners. The value would go up if they had any hotel partners with a fair exchange rate. ANA (an exception to instant transfers), Virgin, Air Canada and Avianca are top airline partners for maximizing your points. They can also transfer to Delta if you wish and while the rates aren't ideal, they can transfer to Marriott and Hilton as well. ANA provides almost unbeatable value for booking a Round the World flight all in Business Class. The stated value also assumes you will take advantage of transfer partners rather than book via their booking portal, where they are only worth between 1 and 1.5 cents. We've also created a Guide to American Express Membership Rewards.

Bonus points for spend in the following bonus categories:
Earn 5x Membership Rewards points on airfare (booked directly with the airline or via AmexTravel.com and on prepaid hotels when booked via AmexTravel.com), up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year.
Only when booked via AmexTravel.com; Otherwise, hotels will earn 1X points per dollar spent
- With over $1,800 in available statement credits, this is a premium travel rewards card with benefits galore. (Terms apply.) Note: Aside from the listed bonus categories, earn 1X on all other eligible purchases.
- The Platinum card hasn't shed its travel roots, but it’s expanded beyond to become a lifestyle card with perks like Uber, Saks Fifth Avenue, Equinox, and more. (Enrollment required)
- Amex Membership Rewards points are extremely flexible, with the option to redeem for travel directly through Amex Travel or transfer to a wide range of airline and hotel partners.
Pros
- A wide array of travel and lifestyle credits and exclusive access that can enhance your life.
- There is no better card for the breadth and variety of airport lounge access worldwide. Plus, the Centurion Lounge network is the largest amongst credit card issuers.
- One of the best cards to earn points on airfare: 5 points per dollar on airfare purchased directly with airlines or through the Amex Travel portal (on up to $500,000 of airfare purchases per calendar year).
Cons
- High annual fee that will require a bit of work to fully maximize.
- Besides airfare and select hotels, it's not the best card to use for other purchases as it only earns 1X on categories outside of flights booked directly with the airlines (5X) or through the Amex Travel portal (5X on up to $500,000 of airfare purchases per calendar year) and 5X points for prepaid hotels booked with Amex Travel.
- Car rental insurance is only secondary, not primary as it is with premium cards from Chase and Capital One.

- Free night award is capped at 35,000 points, although you can use up to 15,000 points of your own to increase that to a 50,000 point room
- Marriott Bonvoy Gold elite status does not offer a ton of perks compared to other hotel loyalty programs or the higher Marriott Bonvoy tiers

Earn 175,000 Bonus Points after spending $8,000 on eligible purchases within the first six months of Card Membership (Terms apply).
Bonus points for spend in the following bonus categories:
- Very high earn rate for all spend at Hilton properties (12X)

Pros
- If you stay at Hilton Hotels often, the 12X earn rate on Hilton Hotels will really add up.
- You'll get up to $60 in statement credits each quarter at Hilton family hotels
- Includes mid-tier Hilton Gold status, a way to spend to Diamond status, and you can spend your way to up to two free nights at any Hilton property in the world.
Cons
- The card only earns Hilton Honors points, so you would not be able to redeem them for stays at other hotel chains.
- Earning a specific type of co-branded point, like Hilton Honors points, limits your redemption opportunities and your points balance may be worth less over time if the program changes how points are redeemed.
- The card no longer includes Priority Pass lounge access or the ability to earn Free Night Reward certificates
Since Hilton moved to a variable pricing model, on average you'll be offered roughly a 0.5 cent value per point. What is nice is that although the pricing is mostly variable, they still cap the "standard" redemption rate on all properties. With the 5th night free on all award stays and resort fees waived on award stays, it's very possible to well exceed this value - even getting 1-2 cents per point - when used wisely.
