American Express® Business Gold Card
Our ratings are determined by the authors and editors on our team. Each individual card feature is compared against all other cards we offer and the total score is an average of those 4 ratings.
Bonus Offer
Earn 70,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $10,000 within first 3 months. Terms apply.
** For personal Amex Platinum cardholders only **
Platinum Card® Members get 40% more Hilton Honors™ Points when you transfer Membership Rewards® points through from May 9 to May 31. Offer is only available to current Platinum Card Members on a Platinum Account opened on or before April 20, 2024. Terms apply.
Please note: This transfer bonus is part of the American Express 40th Birthday celebration for The Platinum Card® from American Express. Only personal U.S. Platinum Card® cardholders are eligible. It seems that those holding personal Platinum cards like the Schwab Platinum Card are elso eligible – however, many people that are eligible are not seeing the offer in their account so make sure you see the 40% bonus before transfering!
While it’s always hard to recommend speculative transfers, Hilton points have gotten more attractive since announcing that SLH hotels will be fully integrated into Hilton Honors (See Dave’s recent musing about his thinking on how Hilton points may be becoming more valuable). And as long as you have at least the lowest tier Hilton status, the 5th night is free on any award and resort fees are also waived on award stays.
We value an Amex point at 1.7 cents and a Hilton point at 0.5 cents and while those values are average, with a 5th night free award you can definitely do well transfering 1,000 Amex points for 2,800 Hilton Honors points.
Our advice is to run some sample searches for potential redemptions to see the value you’re likely to get before transfering.
Here’s an interesting one. Aeromexico Rewards points are worth *roughly* 0.75 cents each but with a wide range of ways to redeem.
Normally, you get 1.6 Aeromexico points for 1 Membership Rewards points so that bumps to 1,920 Aeromexico for 1,000 Amex under this ptomotion – so almost 2.1.
Aeromexico uses a range of redemption options including standard fixed awards and flexible awards – and you’ll see what’s available by searching and that does not require an account.
The last Aeromexico transfer bonus was in 2019, so these are pretty rare – though 20% isn’t a total game changer.
You can search here (use Google Translate in your browser if available as it’s in Spanish) to check possible redemptions.
Importantly, note the Aeromexico Rewards cancellation policy which is that, well, you can’t cancel it. You can change it, though.
Award Ticket may not be cancelled or reimbursed. If the Member decides not to use the Award Ticket and does not have a flight date scheduled, their Award Ticket will be open for a future flight on the same route, season and cabin.
The Award Ticket will be open for 1 (one) year after the original issuing date, so the trip must be completed within said validity period. Route or cabin changes are not applicable to new Award Tickets. However, there might be a tax and Premier Point difference between the original Award Ticket and the new one. Said difference must be covered when the new Award Ticket is issued. The issuing of the new Award Ticket is subject to seat availability on the desired flight.
As always, your best uses are to fly Delta One to Europe (excluding England) for 50,000 miles – IF you can find available award space and to book ANA First and Business class awards.
Business Class on ANA to Japan would be 35,000 – 37,000 Amex points while First Class would be 56,000 – 66,000 Amex points (depending on if you are on the West Coast (cheaper) or East Coast.
One more great use is domestically on Delta within the US or US-Mexico/Canada.
Transfer time is up to 48 hours (often close to instant, though).

- Amazing Membership Rewards points earning rate for 6 popular business spending categories
- No Preset Spending Limit
- Card membership includes the very well regarded American Express customer service
Pros
- You can't beat the 4X points on 2 out of the following 6 categories each month: U.S. advertising and media, U.S. gas stations, U.S. electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers, U.S. restaurants, U.S. wireless telephone service providers, and U.S. Transit
- Although the annual fee seems high, if you max out the 4X on $150,000 in purchases, that earns you 600,000 Membership Rewards points which Your Best Credit Cards values at around $10,000
- Card membership includes the very well regarded American Express customer service
Cons
- The high annual fee, despite being worth it for high spenders
- If you spend well over $150,000 a year in these categories, you may max it out and remaining spend earns at just 1X.
- Car rental CDW coverage is secondary to your own auto insurance
Instant Transfers as well as solid transfer partners. The value would go up if they had any hotel partners with a fair exchange rate. ANA (an exception to instant transfers), Virgin, Air Canada and Avianca are top airline partners for maximizing your points. They can also transfer to Delta if you wish and while the rates aren't ideal, they can transfer to Marriott and Hilton as well. ANA provides almost unbeatable value for booking a Round the World flight all in Business Class. The stated value also assumes you will take advantage of transfer partners rather than book via their booking portal, where they are only worth between 1 and 1.5 cents. We've also created a Guide to American Express Membership Rewards.

Since AAdvantage moved to revenue based redemptions, they are a bit less valuable than they used to be. However, they can still book First and Business Class seats on oneworld partner airlines like Qatar Airways and Japan Airlines, and we also find that they can have occasional deals with forward cabin seats on American.

Pros
- Earn elite night credits from eligible spend
- Grants you automatic World of Hyatt Discoverist status

Cons
- Somewhat high annual fee

- The Discoverist status is the lowest of the Hyatt elite tiers
Hyatt award rates range from 3,500 to 45,000 points per night at their regular hotels and resorts. At all-inclusive resorts and Miraval, the prices can reach as high as 58,000 points per night, Almost without fail, during even remotely peak times, we can find roughly 2 cents per point in value. You can even book Suites for incrementally more points (Premium Suite costs twice as much as a room, for example). I tend to find these are one of the best ways to spend Chase Ultimate Rewards points which transfer 1:1. They are the only major hotel program in the US with fixed award charts making it a great program to be able to set goals for your redemptions..

- The $100 lounge membership discount may not move the needle for you to purchase a membership that costs at least $550 per year
Alaska miles have a few things going for them that make them worth a bit more than the average mile, especially to Asia, Fiji, and the South Pacific where they still have separate charts with great rates on First and Business Class. However, since joining Oneworld, they are increasingly making awards more expensive as they integrate new programs. They also partner with luxury Taiwan based Starlux. Additionally, only Marriott points transfer to Alaska making them harder to acquire than most.

They have a similar network to AA in terms of reach via the Star Alliance and also (unlike Delta) allow for booking First Class international awards in the Star Alliance network, but they charge noticeably more for Partner Awards and the rates keep (stealthily) rising. United partner Lufthansa tends to have good availability to Europe making it somewhat easier to use to Europe than American, which relies heavily on British Airways and BA charges incredibly steep surcharges on those awards.

Bonus Offer
Earn 3 Free Nights (each night valued up to 50,000 points) after spending $3,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening.

- Earn an outstanding 6X points per dollar for stays at Marriott Bonvoy hotels and resorts.
- Automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver elite status, with a pathway to Gold status every year by spending $35,000+ on the card
Pros
- The annual free night award on the card is worth around $210 based on our estimations - more than double the $95 annual fee
- The card is especially rewarding on Marriott purchases, with the ability to earn an excellent 6X multiplier at Marriott Bonvoy properties
- Great travel card all around, thanks to travel protections and no foreign transaction fees
Cons
- $95 annual fee
- Silver elite status doesn't provide many perks on its own, so it's worth it to achieve Gold status or upgrade to a higher-tier Marriott Bonvoy credit card
- Only earns 2x Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar after reaching the $6,000 cap on combined purchases on grocery stores, gas stations and dining
While Marriott Bonvoy dropped all award charts in favor of a dynamic pricing system, it hasn't gotten out of hand and the 5th night free on awards can still provide outsized value. It's also hard to beat the breadth of Marriott Bonvoy properties all over the world.

Cons
- IHG Rewards points aren't worth as much as other points currencies.
- May have a lower sign-up bonus than the personal version of the card.
IHG, home of hotel brands like Intercontinental and Holiday Inn, generally provide about four tenths of a cent in value, following a 2021 devaluation and move to fully dynamic award pricing. I'll redeem when I can get more than that. While you can transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards to IHG, you really never should as you are cutting the value in half as they transfer 1:1. There is no cap on any hotel rates in points like with Hilton. If you have an IHG Premier or Business Premier credit card, you'll get the 4th night free on rewards which can add significant value.
